| I would like to contribute a report of a recent
workshop to your GM debate . The workshop, "Biotechnology-Derived
Nutritious Foods for Developing Countries: Needs, Opportunities,
and Barriers," was held in January 2002 and a summary with
expanded abstracts was published in the Food and Nutrition Bulletin
in December 2002. The editors of the publication are Dr. Howarth
E. Bouis, Dr. David Lineback, and Dr. Barbara Schneeman. The
workshop was organized by the International Life Sciences Institute
(ILSI) Human Nutrition Institute and International Food Biotechnology
Committee, the International Food Policy Research Institute
(IFPRI) and the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Nutrition
(JIFSAN, a multi disciplinary research and education program
established in 1996 by the US Food and Drug Administration and
the University of Maryland). Funding for the workshop was provided
by ILSI and JIFSAN. Further information about ILSI is available
at the ILSI website (www.ilsi.org),
by telephone at 202-659-0073, or by email at ilsi@ilsi.org.
Participants in the workshop included 32 individuals with
expertise in
modern biotechnology, nutrition, or both. There were representatives
from
16 developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
A list of the
participants is included in the publication. The expanded
abstracts
describe presentations given during plenary sessions and the
workshop
summary was developed from small-group discussions, which
were then
summarized and prioritized by the whole group.
