Advice on GM (Genetic Modification)
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra)
is responsible for the control of the deliberate release of genetically
modified organisms (GMOs), and for national, EU and international
policy on the environmental safety of GMOs. See the GM
page of the Defra website.
The Advisory Committee on releases to the Environment (ACRE)
is an independent Advisory Committee composed of leading scientists.
Its main function is to give statutory advice to Ministers in the
UK and devolved administrations on the risks to human health and
the environment from the release and marketing of GMOs.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is an independent food safety watchdog
set up by an Act of Parliament in 2000 to protect the public's health
and consumer interests in relation to food. See the GM
page of the FSA website.
The work of the independent committees and working groups that
advise the Food Standards Agency helps ensure that the Agency's
advice to consumers is always based on the best and most recent
scientific evidence. See the Scientific
Committees page of the FSA website.
